The Anxiety of not Being You.
I think many of us these days are frequently dealing with significant levels of anxiety.
Why is this so??... in a seemingly convenient life, just a few clicks away from the next shiny object promising to feed our need.
Well, you can feel it, just reading this can’t you? You know why!… Because somewhere in there our souls are not being met or fulfilled. Clicks don’t satisfify soul! Like a sugar hit, clicks leave us empty within a short time span and just bait for the next one!
Distractions are even more appealing as temporary antidotes or escapes from the incessant demands and intrusions on our time. Adler, a contemporary of Freud, said all problems are relationship problems – a very deep statement if you think about it.
Think about how many texts and emails you typically deal with on a daily, hourly basis – often these are micro intrusions on our time. They may not disturb our flow too much but every moment of consideration is a distraction. Often it’s easier to deal with then and there – shoot back the text/email – balls out of our court 👍 …No wonder we feel like the world and time is speeding up! Think about how available we are, through our devices, to all these communications – many of which aren’t well considered or at least aren’t considering us very well if you think about the marketing side of things.
Yes, we need to systematically work through our ‘to do’ lists that sustain our livelihoods and healthy sprinklings of distraction and inspiration can help tickle us along. We also need to tune into our liveliness, listening for what really nourishes us.
Real hunger needs real food… and is not satisfied well or long by sugar!
Our souls need sustaining substance.
What feeds your soul?
Muster the courage to not follow another distraction for a moment, and listen to your yearning… your hearts desire… yes, the desire in your heart… the longing in your soul.
What might feed that longing and desire?
Simple connection with another soul?
When was the last time you touched or were touched with real care, attention and love or had a heart to heart with a good friend where there is mutual care, love and respect?
When was the last time you took a walk with yourself in nature, and in the same way gave yourself space and time to listen, feel and hear your deeper Self talking back to you?
That’s where the substance of You lies : )
